PANDION founds the knodel foundation

Mai 2018

PANDION AG provides the foundation’s capital and bears the overheads. The non-profit trust bears the name of PANDION’s CEO Reinhold Knodel and his son Patrick, who is Chairman of its Board. The foundation’s goal is to fight global problems. To this end, it primarily supports projects whose focus is to grant people free access to knowledge, irrespective of their origin, sex, colour of their skin, religion or any other affiliations. The long-term UN development goals provide a basic orientation for the foundation, which call for, amongst other things, high-quality education, responsible consumption and production as well as peace, justice and strong institutions. Furthermore, the foundation also supports individual projects within the context of emergency aid and disaster relief.

Founded in mid-2017, the knodel foundation now supports around a dozen projects and initiatives with a focus on Africa (Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Kenya, Niger, Tanzania), as well as India, Iraq and other parts of the world. The foundation researches concepts that fit into the support grid and reviews applications that are received from project owners. Following a thorough assessment, financial support is provided in the event of a positive decision. “One focus is on encouraging so-called social entrepreneurships, where people are motivated to take on an entrepreneurial activity themselves, the primary goal of which is to solve an existing problem,” explains Patrick Knodel. “The entrepreneurial approach leads to at least cost coverage and therefore allows the permanent solution of the problem without donations.” This is the pattern according to which foundation funds are currently being poured into the initiative “EinDollarBrille e.V.”, which produces low-cost glasses in the West African country of Burkina Faso. Other projects help the ”International Justice Mission e.V.” in India to free people from slave labour and protect underage persons from sex dealers. This is done by involving people in the existing legal system, which currently offers no support for the poorest of the poor.

“A number of interesting talks about global problems between my father and myself ultimately led to the idea of setting up a foundation,” explains Patrick Knodel. And his father adds: “The possibility of giving something back to society as a successful businessman is a matter that is very close to my heart. So I am all the more delighted to extend PANDION’s hitherto social commitment in the knodel foundation together with my son Patrick.”

The knodel foundation has its registered offices on the premises of PANDION AG in Cologne. The real-estate company is assuming the overhead costs for the time being. Furthermore, PANDION is investing 500,000 euros in the foundation every year to help it realise its objective.
